Be a good sport

Laughing at defeated opponents, bragging about your achievements, overdoing it with taunts and emotes, can make you look childish. This is all a matter of perspective, though. Don't read this and think my advice is not to taunt other players. I am just saying do not get out of control. When trying to give someone an incentive to FRAG you.

Getting out of control taunting the others is a bit immature and even a child knows better. You don't need to insult others personally so just be a good sport. Can't the others just enough to get them to attack you. That's all you need to do. You don't need to berate someone so much to get them to want to attack you. They already want to come after you to improve their stats and feel like a better player when they play the game.

A good insult at the right time can be a beautiful thing. But when you bombard someone with insults after every move it gets old quickly. So don't do it it is not a necessary tactic to use. If your opponent is already online and playing it pretty good indicator that they want to attack you. So don't worry about it they will be coming after you.

When someone bombards you with insult after insult it almost begins to feel like spam. Nobody wants to feel like they're getting spam as they play their favorite games. So don't think just because you are not trying to sell something or trying to get people to go somewhere online you're not a spammer. As far as I am concerned, a spammer does the same thing over and over again until you are annoyed so much that you don't want to play anymore. So just be aware of your insults are getting out of control to others.

The other side of this coin is this, make sure you can take an insult as well as give it. Of course it's more fun being one to dish out the insults. But remember, the sign of a well balanced player is one that can take the insults as well. Just remember it's part of the game that someone else tries to bait you into attacking them by dishing out some playful insults as well. Don't hang on to them all day. Because they aren't meant to go any further than the current game you're playing. They aren't meant to ruin your day or night. They are meant to pull you out of your hiding spot and give your enemy a clear shot of your location. Don't hang on to the insults they really are only meant to last the length of your current game.

A sign of a balanced and experienced player is being a good sport. You may need to reevaluate the type of player you are if you can't deal with the basics of playing the game. I know this may be tough for some of you but you don't need to hold on to the last game you played forever. You have to let the water roll off your back like it does for the duck. Taking this simple advice will make you a much better player to play against when playing online. Just ask the other players in the room.

Don't hold up survivor games by going AWOL

I think most the hard-core gamers will agree that this issue is a big one. When you're playing a survivor game you're ready to play. Most gamers do not want to sit around waiting for you being ready to join! Nobody wants to wait for a timeout error. They just want to play so put down your smoke and get in there and play the game!

Most players don't mind if you are actually making a concerted effort to play. But since they can't see you they assume that you are just goofing off. To be honest, walking away from your keyboard for an extended period of time is just plain rude. When you sign up for the game be ready to play.

I had a friend that used to sign up for a game and then go out and have a cigarette. This used to drive me crazy to watch him do that. I thought that was so rude.

I would ask him “What are you doing? You just signed up to play!”.

He would say to me “It’s no problem. Not everyone will be signed up by the time finish my smoke.”

Inevitably the room would be full by the time he got halfway through his cigarette. He had no urgency to finish smoking. He just sat there and made everyone else wait. Everyone else was ready to play the game and he was too busy to get his fix to start playing. Why did he even sign up if he was craving a cigarette?

Also, camping out is not good either. If you are playing a team game and you are not playing and are just camping out on the field that is also unacceptable. What you're doing is hurting the team score. You are also making it more difficult for other players that are currently playing. It is easier for the opposing team to double-team somebody if you aren't there to provide protection. Yes, you may have instant gratification when you do pick up your controller to play. But your fellow teammates are too busy getting pummeled while you just stand in the corner. So yes, you get to pick up the controller and begin playing but that is at the expense of the other players trying to improve. Both players can improve if they're too busy fighting off a double-team by their/your opponent.

So for all you players out there, don't sign up for a survivor game and not be ready to play. Yes, you may have to wait a minute or two before the game starts but suffer through it and be ready to play at a moment's notice. Yes I know it is tough in today's society to have to wait but sometimes you have to do it. If everyone follows this simple rule in the overall gameplay will be better and more competitive. You can't ask for any more than that.

Don't pick on the defenseless as their defenses may be hidden or you may be just discouraging a newbie from ever playing the game again and that's just wrong.

This one is all for the experienced game players out there. Don't pick on the player that you perceive as defenseless. There are two reasons why, the player may be just playing possum for you to come after him and they will annihilate you or you may be discouraging a new player that just picked up the game and is learning how to play for the first time.

I can't count how many times I have played possum in an online game! It is really easy to do. Just wander around like you don't know where you are. Eventually an egomaniac is going to come after you thinking that you are an easy target. Then when they come up to you just completely hit them with your arsenal. Gosh, what an easy kill that was. It just delivered itself to you.

Psychologically, you may feel superior to the week, appearing player, but that player may have just picked up the game and felt like they were just experienced enough to compete in the online world. If you make their game playing so miserable by attacking them that player may just put down the game and stop playing. Then when their friend calls and ask them to recommend a good first-person shooter game they may not recommend a game that you may love. Sales may go down on that game and game companies may have the false impression that the game is not popular and possibly stop programming games that you may love.

My point is this, though you may have that moment of superiority by attacking the defenseless player. You may have permanently discouraged that player from giving that game positive reviews to their friends and on and Internet review site. That does you or the game no good, and it doesn't do anything for the defenseless player. They may not like a legitimately fun game because you are not making it fun for them and not because the game is bad. You may possibly change the scope of good games being created for online play. If you like that game you are playing then you just made an enjoyable game on enjoyable for someone else. Is that what you really want?

Don't say sorry if you don't mean it

How many times have you been playing a competitive game online and some one gets you, I mean they get you really good, and they utter those familiar words "I'm sorry." whether verbally or in a typewritten chat. The other player probably thinks they are being nice, maybe they think they are letting you down easy. The fact of the matter is, it is poor gamer etiquette to say sorry if you don't really mean it. And in a competitive game who really means it? Nobody. The no sorry rule holds true for all competitive online games be they puzzle games, arcade games, or skill based strategy games. The rule holds paricularly true for first person shooter games. You may think you are helping things by apologizing for fragging someone but in the end it just makes you look like a sarchastic jerk. Get your points and move on. Don't say you're sorry, especially if you're going to just turn around and frag someone else. Everyone knows that's how the game works. Everyone is big enough and old enough to deal with it when they are fragged. There's no holding hands button. Just attack and get on with it.

Don't talk smack if you can't back it up!

We all know that smack talking is part of the game. But honestly, don't talk smack if you can't back it up. Talking smack is an essential entertaining part of the game, but if you talk smack somebody know this, they will be coming at you twice as hard. So, I remember this one time where a guy told me "You suck, and it's gonna be my personal pleasure to make sure you suffer the rest of the game!" In turn I said nothing but made it my point in that game to track down that player to make him suffer.

You see, I would've never gone after that player if he had not talked smack to me. I spent the entire game just pummeling that player that talked smack to me. The guy that talked that smack had no skills whatsoever! Essentially, I ruined his learning curve by going after him. He would've never had a player gunning for him the entire time he was online. If he hadn't talked smack. If you don't have the skills to back up what you say then don't say anything at all.

So if you want to learn how to play the game just play it. Once you become a professional then you can talk smack because then you can thwart any player that comes after you. If you are good enough you will be able to defend yourself when they do come after you. Once someone has their eye on you you will never escape them. Sometimes if you talk too much smack they will make your immediate game miserable as well as every game they see you playing on.
