Don't take getting FRAGGED personally... after all it is just a game

In my opinion this is the most important thing gamers need to remember. It is just a game. Nobody is personally attacking you. Nobody wants you really dead. Nobody wants something really bad to happen to you. Just remember this when you're playing the game. It is nothing personal at all. Your opponent is just trying to do the best he can and that means he needs to attack you.

I had a friend that took his game defeats so personally that it ruined his day when his opponent got the best of him. He would throw things, he would scream at the TV, and he would even have trouble eating after a bad day at the office. It got to the point where I wouldn't even want to play with him. I knew that if I did well it would ruin his day. I even got to the point where I would purposely play worse and let him defeat me just so I would not ruin his day.

Where is the fun in that? Where is the fun for me? I always had trouble understanding how a levelheaded guy would just lose it when playing a game. I mean the guy was mellow, quiet, and an artistic type. What caused this Jekyll and Hyde transformation once he picked up his controller and started playing? He literally acted like I was really shooting him when in reality. I was just shooting his character in the game! Every shot I took on and was a personal attack against him.

I remember this one time I forgot who I was dealing with. It was a beautiful summer day and we just had a nice lunch. Dr. Jekyll suggested we go back to his place and start playing a game. Foolishly I agreed, and we headed back to his place. Somewhere along the way he sneaked in his elixir and the transformation began as soon as we picked up our controllers. He was screaming and yelling with every hit I made on him. The veins in his eyes turned bright red and the hair on his neck was standing on end. One time he got so angry because I FRAGGED him he threw his controller across the room so hard that I thought he had broken it! Can you believe that? To this day, I still have no idea what came over him. And why he got so angry. It almost ended our friendship.

No matter how hard I try to explain myself my friend wouldn't forgive me. He acted like. I personally stole something from him or lied to him. I spent a good amount of time trying to explain to him that I was just trying to better myself to the game. Unfortunately, that came at the expense of me playing well and him getting FRAGED. If I knew it would possibly end our long friendship. I would've let him win the game. If I had done that I feel that you would have had an inflated ego about how well he played the game and possibly could've really embarrassed himself against an opponent that really knew how to play. So would that have benefited him?

So here are my tips to all the passionate game players out there. Don't get angry. Don't throw things. Stop thinking that your opponent is personally attacking you, online or off line because all he is doing is playing the game to the best of his ability. The bottom line is. It's very poor etiquette to get so angry about not doing well that you're taking the fun out of the game.
